Gillingham’s pre-season programme is underway, with Gareth Ainsworth’s men getting run-outs away at Dover Athletic, and against Reading at Priestfield.
The results are largely unimportant at this stage, but for the record, they defeated Dover 1-0 courtesy of a Robbie McKenzie effort from close range, while their home game with Reading ended in a goalless draw.
These early friendlies are mostly about getting minutes into the players’ legs and building fitness, but there were still intriguing topics to discuss after the Reading game, from the performances of the players, including one or two who could potentially be surplus to requirements moving forward, plus the overall feeling of how Ainsworth’s squad is coming together ahead of the new campaign.
Owen Stanley takes the helm to recap the first couple of pre-season games, as he chats to fellow Gills fans about what we’ve seen so far as the build-up to the new season began in earnest.
